Same commute, in fact on 87 I drove a little gentler once I noticed the economy was tanking.
Also, the fuel type thing is showing what was going in, not what was in.
So yeah, I’ll just pay up for 93. It’s basically like a day and half of extra driving.

Where can you get gas that cheap? I have to run 93 because of my tune and at my last fill up it was $3.60 a gallon.

I’m confused, your thing shows much better economy with regular?
In any event if your city % really changed that much, I’m not sure you can really compare them anyway?

Yeah . I filled up today 93 was 3.45

South Carolina, specifically Lowe’s Food Stores. Every $100 in food bought is 5 cents off a gallon, and I had 20 cents off.

Fuel type showed what he filled with at the time, not what was in the tank. For simplicity, assume the fuel types have been flipped.

I don’t really use the city thing accurately. Also, the pics got reversed. No, it gets 5 mpg better on 93.

I’m amazed it’s that low in SC, given they literally encourage price gouging there.
Other hand, WTF, $3.60/gal for 93? Not even Shell’s bullshit (93 is now $0.83/gal more than 87) is $3.60 around here.
Also, Shell’s 93 pricing is complete bullshit. See also: I can go get Marathon or BP or Sunoco 93 for $3.29/gal.

If your car can use a higher octane, it’s generally better that you do. It will retard the timing for lower octane, but you won’t get the best performance or fuel economy. In the end, its usually a wash, so why not just use the higher octane?
My F150 is rated for 87, but for better towing it recommends 91. On my regular commute I average 23.5 with 91, I average 21 mpg on 87. This is after 5 tanks of each octane on fuelly for comparison.
When I factor in the 20 cent difference between regular and premium and the mileage I lose, it’s better if I use 91 because it actually saves me almost $10 a month in gas.

Is the GTI tuned for 93?
I’m asking this because popular theory is that’s the only time there’ll be a positive difference. I also have anecdotal evidence supporting that, although it’s in the form of a late-malaise small block Chevy, last year of carbs on that model. 14mpg on regular, 13 on premium. My dad is pretty anal about mpg driving, and always insisted I run premium in his vehicle, but I was too broke to feed that monster premium when regular was already $5/gallon.

This explains a lot. I'm pretty hard on my Beetle for its mileage but I only ever get 89 as it's usually 2.85 after discount and 91 is usually more like 3.10 after discount. Most places near me don't even have 93.

I miss 93 octane, we dont get that out in these parts. Not that I really need it since 91 is just fine for me. But I do miss it anyways haha.

Cars are designed for certain types of fuel; my Grand Cherokee’s economy didn’t improve when I accidentally filed it with premium. It was an expensive mistake.

VW rates the car at 220hp using 91 octane. The gas cap says use 87. The 2015 models of the same generation say 91 but for 2016 they started saying 87 on the cap. I put 93 in my '18 GTI because that's what premium is in Illinois.

Who would shoot you? It’s nothing but trendy well-to-do white folk around here now. Back in the day it was a bit more sporty, but when it costs $2,000 to rent an average 1 bedroom apartment, the all folks out and about are named Tad and Baxter and don’t have socks on with their wingtips, you are pretty much safe. It’s wall to wall shit heads, my good man.

My friend last year was jumped and hit with a brick walking home from his job at the W hite H ouse. In 2016 when it was Caps/ Flyers I watched a brawl of old white guys break out. No joke like 50+.. then the wifes got into it. It was wild. Since then I’ve stayed clear, but if it’s safe now maybe I’ll come back haha.

That’s interesting.
The GTI is a turbocharged engine, yes?
Per the owners manuals of equipped vehicles , GM’s Atlas 4.2 can be run on 87 octane, but “ may experience pinging” under heavy engine load, and directs for the use of 89 if you frequently experience pinging. I interpret this as meaning you should be running 89 but can get away with running 87.
Turbocharged engines are more likely to experience detonation. It makes me wonder if VW tunes for higher octane levels, but knowing that there will always be people running 87 for whatever reason, so it's programmed to run richer if it notices detonation occurring.

I did not know that about the atlas engine. You’re probably right about why vw says 87. The forums debate the two continuously, but seeing Jordan’s post only confirms my choice to use premium.

Direct Injection is witch-craft. You can almost entirely eliminate pinging in turbo and high-compression engines whem runnin on lower octane fuels. All of the Ford eco-boost engines run just fine on 87, and only the ST products and Eco-boost ‘Stang even mention that “although the engine will run fine on 87 octane, full rated power is only acheived with the use of 93 octane gasoline”
The 2.7 ecoboost in our F150 drinks 87 all the time, runs ~20lbs of boost and makes 325 HP and 400lb/ft from that little v6.
MAGIC.
( Current VW turbos are D. I.)

Even with a carb you can run a ton of boost on regular by running rich with a less aggressive advance.

Strange, the last time I filled up my GTI I used Regular (85 octane in Utah), and I’m currently under a half tank and have driven about 240 miles.
The computer milage estimate says I have about 150 miles left in the tank, but I’ll fill up when it gets closer to 50-60 miles of range left.

It could be due to the humidity here, and the engine is having to compensate for knock and lower octane with more fuel.

same here. Due to the plant explosion in Superior gas in Northern WI is up to 2.90+ for regular(currently 2.95 at my store.) , and 3.50+ for premium .
when I bought the BMW in January premium was still under 3.00/gallon.

Sure, but with DI, because the fuel isnt actually added to the combustion chamber until just before intended ignition, preignition, even if it occurs is very close to the intended ignition timing, meaning there is virtually no need to richen the the mixture to prevent it. Theorhetically you need some time for the fuel to mix with the air in the combustion chamber, so your injection can’t wait until spark, but it can very close... Also, see Mazda’s dual-cycle Skya ctiv -X spark and/or c ompression ignition engine, it seemlessly switches between spark an d compression-ignition cycles depending on engine load and operating rpm thanks to the magic of DI and fast modern processors.
Is the fuel charge likely to ping in these engine conditions? No problem, switch modes to compression ignition and make sure it DOES, but at the timing you want.

Actually now that I think about it Colorado had 85 regular too, which is even more surprising when you think about the elevation there.
